Germany’s political economy of labour migration has oscillated between liberalizing and restricting policies. Recently, a highly proactive approach to attract skilled migrants has been adopted. Compared to other destination countries, Germany has invested significantly in the re-establishment of transnational, state-funded infrastructures and programs to support desired skilled mobility. Though still small in scale, these new approaches follow ambitious political claims of relatively large cross-border skill flows accompanied by ethical, transparent, secure and fair recruitment. This country profile offers general insights into Germanys skilled labour migration policies and gives particular attention to major skill migration corridors involving India, Morocco, Philippines and Indonesia.
